It lies in Central Europe, in the Carpathian basin which is surrounded by the Alps, the Carpathians and the Dinari mountain. Its territory is 96.030 km2, its population is 10.245.000. Its capital is Budapest. The surface of the country is covered by the flat ground of the Great Hungarian Plain, the diverse terrain of Transdanubia and the mountains of the Northern mountain range of medium height. Its main river is the Danube (its length in Hungary: 417 km ). Its biggest lake is Balaton, which is the biggest lake in Central Europe as well. The weather of the country is changeable, the mean yearly temperature is 12 °C. The warmest month (July) is 22 °C, the coldest one (January) is -1,5 °C. Hungary takes good care not to let its natural worth damage due to technical development and structural transformation. Up to 2002, 177,7 ha territory was declared national park. The country is very rich in under-surface thermal waters. In 1000-2000 m depth there is a spring-water supply storing large geothermical energy. The mineral- and medicinal waters contain various minerals ( due to former volcanic activity ).
